Fall Protection Safety Tips Every Lineman Should Know

Anchored in Safety: Discover the CHANCE® Pole-Mounted Fall Arrest Bracket

When carrying out line maintenance tasks at heights, it is essential to adhere to all relevant regulations, codes, manufacturer’s instructions, warnings, and employer’s work practices concerning the use of properly designed and rated fall restraint/arrest systems.

Avoid Unnecessary Risks

Always use a properly rated anchorage point when using CHANCE® ladders and platforms with fall restrain/arrest systems. For specific guidelines, refer to OSHA standards 29 CFR 1910.269(g)(2), which detail the requirements for fall protection systems during activities such as climbing or moving on poles, towers, or similar structures. Utilizing inappropriate anchor points can lead to severe or even fatal injuries in the event of a fall.

It is important to note that CHANCE® ladders, platforms, platform tripods, and railings, which are commonly used by linemen, are not rated for and should never be used as anchorage points for fall restrain/arrest systems.

Use the Right Equipment for the Job

A recommended option for a pole-mounted anchorage point is the CHANCE® Fall Arrest Bracket PSC4021489. When properly mounted on a utility pole that has been approved by your employer, the PSC4021489 offers a reliable and independent anchorage point for a fall arrest lanyard within your fall protection system.

The PSC4021489 bracket meets the 5,000-pound support requirement specified by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140 for personal fall protection systems. It features a ratchet system and a 48-inch nylon strap for easy attachment to poles up to 18 inches in diameter, along with a swivel attachment head for straightforward lanyard connection. Additionally, the 6-inch Epoxiglas® link provides insulation and isolation from differences in potential.

Always ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, codes, manufacturer’s instructions, and employer’s work practices regarding the inspection, usage, care, maintenance, and storage of fall restraint/arrest equipment.
