A Concrete-Free Foundation System for Light Poles: How the Base, Guard & Collar Work Together

See how electrical contractors use a 3-piece light pole foundation system with a screw-in base, anti-theft guard, and precast collar, saving time and money.

Light pole foundation work has traditionally meant excavation, concrete delivery, cure time, lane closures, and return trips before the pole can be installed. For contractors, municipalities, and project owners, those steps can add time, cost, and coordination challenges to every site.

Hubbell Power Systems provides a full turn-key solution for your lighting base with three essential components that will make your life easier and turn your project into an efficient, concrete-free operation. The three pieces are everything you need from the ground up:

  1. 1. The base

  2. 2. The anti-theft guard

  3. 3. The collar

Let's dig into each component so you can see exactly how they save time on your schedule.

The Base: A Screw-In Foundation Without Excavation

The first element of the turn-key trio is a one-piece steel base, also known as the Instant Foundation. The name started because the base can be installed in just a few minutes, almost instant when you compare it to a conventional concrete base that can take hours to install and days for the concrete to cure. Tested and trusted by DOTs and utility crews since 1976, the Hubbell Instant Foundation is made out of steel, hot dipped galvanized for corrosion protection and most commonly in 6" or 8" pipe. There's also a helix at the bottom of the pipe with a pilot point that helps drive it into the ground. And here's the important part: there is no excavation at all. You read that right, no excavation. As the base screws, or advances, into the ground, the surrounding soil gets pushed to the side, or displaced, and the foundation reaches depth. The Instant Foundation can also be ordered with a custom base plate designed to match the light pole, EV charger, camera pole, or other equipment being mounted.

The Guard: Cable Protection at the Pole Base

The second element is the anti-theft guard, a patented Hubbell solution that adds an extra layer of protection where lighting systems are often most vulnerable: at the pole base. As we all know, copper is being stolen from poles all over major metropolitan areas, and this piece came to fix that problem. The anti-theft guard is a clamp installed between the Instant Foundation base plate and the bottom plate of the lighting pole. The clamp grips the conduit that runs through the ground to the poles and secures them in place. When someone tries to pull and steal them, the clamp activates and the cables are cut right there. That means there's no need to replace the cables underground, they're protected by the anti-theft clamp. In addition to enhancing public safety, this little device saves cities and municipalities thousands of dollars and a whole lot of trouble.

The Collar: A Finished Look Without Poured Concrete

The third piece, but definitely not the least, is the cherry on top of the cake: the precast concrete collar. These are beautifully precast, 24" in diameter, and available in four different heights: 6", 12", 24", and 36", to accommodate different looks for your project. The collars fit perfectly between the Instant Foundation and the mounted pole, and the finish is just amazing.

Because the collar is precast, there is no need to schedule a concrete truck, set forms, wait for a pour, or return after curing. That helps electrical contractors reduce coordination on site and deliver a more finished installation in less time. Instead of managing wet conditions, crews can install the foundation, set the collar, mount the pole, and move on to the next location.

How the System Helps Crews Save Time on Site

Now, picture this with me. You show up to a job site with a two-person crew - no need to excavate, no big equipment, no soil to haul off, no extended lane shutdowns, no waiting for the perfect weather. It sounds like a dream come true, and now it is with the turn-key trio.

Time is money, and concrete takes time. That's why so many have already made the switch and replaced the traditional base. The best part about this solution is that you have full control of your schedule - install one entire system in about 30 minutes, and move right on to your next project.

It's beautiful, it's fast, it's safe, and it's Hubbell. No questions about it.
