Multi-Functional Mudroom Lighting Ideas

Spring has arrived and with it, a variety of weather. In this in-between time before summer, it’s common to find a variety of hats, boots, and coats making their way onto the floor near the door. Even in warmer climates, umbrellas and backpacks need a designated place to call home.

Enter the multi-functional mudroom. Or, as many designers like to call it, the “drop zone.” In either case, this entryway area has gotten much attention lately. It’s another area of your home that can both be stylish and functional. It’s an excellent opportunity to make a statement that has guests saying “wow!” when they walk through the door.

There are several ways to make your mudroom a focal point in your home by using the right light fixtures.

Give Your Mudroom a Flair of Style with Statement Lighting

Instead of plain recessed lighting or unobtrusive ceiling light, try a chandelier or a semi-flush mount light. You can get these styles in smaller sizes, often with 1 to 3 or even four lights. The smaller scale fits nicely in an entryway but still adds plenty of drama and crisp illumination.

The Debut Collection semi-flush mount light was the choice of designer Melissa Olson of Cottage and Key Homes for a flip house property in Austin, Texas. “The mudroom is a must for me, and I love to design our homes with spaces that are well thought out. We like spaces like this to be not only functional but stylish,” said Melissa. The Debut Collection has a vintage modern silhouette, a sleek graphite finish and an open design ideal for the home’s Modern Farmhouse aesthetic. Melissa chose a dark feature wall created in a unique herringbone pattern and added plenty of cubby storage space. A light-colored wood bench complements the lovely dark green wall.

For a cool twist, add a ceiling pendant to an entryway mudroom. This home has a mid-century-modern meets-coastal-cottage charm, so the Gulliver Collection pendant was the perfect selection. The pendant’s hand-painted, woodgrain texture complements the coastal design of the room while illuminating the space. This entry also features a ship-lap-style wall and lots of storage space.

Drop Zone Delight

Sometimes less is more. Create a drop zone from an empty wall, transforming what could have been wasted space into functional seating, storage and even a small counter to drop mail or keys. A refreshing green color scheme featured on the built-ins is also echoed in the adjoining laundry room, creating a nice flow between the two functional areas.
