De-Light-Ful Laundry Rooms

Laundry rooms are the latest flex space. Learn how to light them properly and other design details for a great laundry room.

Once relegated to a basement corner, washers and dryers have moved upstairs into their very own room. Laundry rooms are the latest flex space: not only can you wash and dry clothing there, but the room can do double duty as pet washing areas, mudrooms, craft areas and more. Plus, they are fabulously stylish. Cool light fixtures, upscale cabinetry and gorgeous tile are just a few of the chic details that make doing the laundry a pleasure instead of a chore. Here are a few of our favorite laundry rooms, all accentuated by statement light fixtures that elevate the room's design.

Modern Elegance
Crisp white cabinets are a natural for laundry rooms. They impart an aura of cleanliness and help the space feel larger and brighter. Open shelving adds interest, especially when piled high with luxurious towels. A subtle, silver and white wallpaper lends an elegant look. Matte black cabinet hardware complements the Hinton swing arm wall light above the sink. Hinton's signature adjustable arm provides focused task lighting wherever needed, and its seeded glass shade and black finish offer a touch of industrial-meets-modern flair to the room.

Storage & Style
Storage plus style is the name of the game in this laundry room. Cabinets that stretch up to the ceiling provide tons of extra storage space and look fantastic too. Roll-out storage bins are there when you need them to toss kids' backpacks, hats, and coats — or use them as hampers for items requiring a wash. Gold cabinet hardware delivers a luxurious touch, as does the Cayce pendant finished in beautiful vintage gold. Cayce's graceful, filigreed center band subtly mimics the penny tile pattern on the laundry room walls At the same time, the gold trio candle holder makes an easily visible statement through the clear glass shade.

Charming Details
Antique charm abounds in this laundry room. A wooden counter over the washer and dryer utilizes space wisely for folding laundry. Crisp white subway tile on the walls paired with a vintage-inspired floor tile are true design classics. A metal-framed window above the deep farmhouse sink is the ideal complement for the Cinq Pendant. Cinq's geometric panels are held in place by metallic channels that reflect the look of the window's leaded glass panes.
