Dressing For Live-Line Barehand Success

Written by Joseph Cardona | Dec 19, 2024 7:30:00 PM

The live-line barehand work method is a technique used by specially trained journeyman linemen to perform maintenance and repairs on high-voltage transmission power lines and substations while the lineman is in direct contact with the energized conductor or equipment. This method allows the conductor or equipment to remain energized, which is crucial in minimizing disruption of power supply to customers. To perform barehand work, linemen must undergo an extensive training program, and once trained, must follow strict safety protocols.

Suit Functionality in Barehand Work

The concept of barehand work is like a bird landing on an energized conductor. Since the bird does not create a pathway that allows current to flow to ground, it can remain on the energized conductor unharmed. Its body has become energized at the same potential as the line. Similarly, when linemen perform barehand work, they wear special conductive suits that are bonded to the energized conductor or other equipment, energizing them to the same potential as the electrical circuit. These suits act as a Faraday cage around the lineman, providing comfort as they complete the energized maintenance. A conductive suit consists of a jacket with hood and trousers, and is typically worn with conductive socks, gloves, and boots. All these items, with exception to the boots, are made of fire-retardant fabric interwoven with conductive fibers. A bonding strap and clamp are also used when attaching the suit to the energized conductor.

CHANCE and Carraro Tecno Partnership

CHANCE is proud to partner with Carraro Tecno to offer premium co-branded conductive suits, boots, and accessories for performing live-line barehand maintenance. These suits are designed to meet IEC 60895:2020 Class 1 standards, carry an arc flash rating of 13 cal/cm SQ, and are machine washable. The conductive boots feature top-quality, water-resistant leather uppers, and an oil-resistant conductive rubber sole. The gloves are made of the same conductive fabric as the suits and include leather grip pads. Other available accessories include conductive bonding straps and bonding quick draw clamps™.
