The Austdac UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) uses Ni-MH (Nickel metal hydride) batteries. The Austdac UPS design minimises the stress on the Ni-MH batteries by ensuring the batteries are charged at a lower rate and not fully discharged while monitoring each cell and overall temperatures. Ni-MH batteries do have a limited life as stated by battery manufacturers such as Energizer who state in their Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Handbook and Application Manual.

Typically NiMH batteries can be recharged hundreds of times, potentially allowing them to be equivalent to hundreds of alkaline batteries in total service over their lifetime. However, battery life is limited to 5 years or less.

Austdac has also observed that in UPS that are 5 years and older that the batteries often need replacing or show signs of deterioration. As the main purpose of the UPS is to reliably provide power when the mains is removed Austdacā€™s policy is to recommend a full test of the UPS and should the testing reveal that the UPS requires further repair of the main unit then a total replacement would be recommended.
